My Letter to my Michigan Senators (both Ds)

Below is my letter I e-mailed to Michigan Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabinow.  Levin is retiring at the end of 2014.  This does give Michiganders a chance to have a voice finally in the US Senate.

The…

U.S. Army Set to Ban Tattoos Below the Elbow or Knees

The U.S. military and tattoos have an entangled history. The rise of the tattoo in popular culture started with floods of inked veterans—especially from World War II—returning home with them. The first tattoo parlor in New York City, established in 1846, served to mark up Civil War soldiers.

It is that strong history that's probably the reason why a blog post on the Army's website…

Contractor that vetted Snowden says it also ran background check for Navy Yard shooter

USIS, the Falls Church government contractor that handled the background check for National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, said Thursday that it also vetted Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis for his secret-level clearance in 2007.

The company, which is under criminal investigation over whether it misled the government about the thoroughness of its background checks, said earlier this week that it had not handled Alexis’s case.…

The Most Interesting School District in America?

When it comes to K–12 education, the nation’s most important election this November may be in Douglas County, Colorado. While most of today’s eye-catching education fights involve high-profile contests in big cities, one of the nation’s most significant struggles may be playing out, largely unnoticed, in this affluent Denver suburb. Here in Colorado’s third-largest school district, with 65,000 students — an enrollment larger than Washington, D.C.’s and as large as…

British Health Care Predictably Running Out Of Money

In Decline: How bad are things in Great Britain's national  health care system? Bad enough that officials are now recruiting cheaper foreign  doctors to save money.

According to the Press Trust of India, "Britain's cash-strapped National  Health Service is planning to strike up a series of health care deals in India,  including inviting Indian doctors to treat patients in the U.K., in a bid to  boost its coffers.

"The proposals center around NHS doctors being…
