"...what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?” “A Republic, if you can keep it

Dear Senator Stabenow:
I have been listening to the debate in the Senate on funding the Government. The speeches by your side are disgusting. This is the Senator Schumer Shutdown. There is no debate or question of that.
President Trump has not vetoed a bill to keep the Government open like President Clinton did repeatedly. President Trump has no vote in the Senate. So there is no way President Trump is responsible for the Senator Schumer Shutdown.
I have heard many of your side say that President Trump walked away from a deal. No one says what the deal was. I have an idea what the deal was since no one on your side is talking about it. It was President Trump you do it our way or we shut the Government down. If that was the “deal”, I am glad he didn’t agree. That was no deal.
I have heard much crying from your side about how this hurts the military. As a person that served 21+ years in the military starting in 1971, I have seen how your party has raped, pillaged, and plundered the military at almost every chance to fund program that your side wanted. Former Secretary of State John Kerry summed up your side’s view of the military when he ran for President. He told students to get an education or they will end up in the military. In other words, those of us that stand up and serve are STUPID! How insulting! He said that while I was serving in the Michigan Army National Guard in Iraq! No one in your party then or now has rebuked SoS Kerry for what he said. That still hurts.
On and on it goes about how the shutdown hurts this and that group. Well, there is a simple cure, vote “YES” to the GOP CR.
Why are we in the Shumer Shutdown? It is simple. The Democrat Party has turned its back on every last American Citizen. Law abiding American Citizens are unimportant. This is 100% about people that are in the country illegally. These people are in violation of immigration law. The Courts have already ruled that the former President exceeded his Constitutional Authority to create DACA. Now we are being asked to make legal an unconstitutional act. How is that proper? I don’t see it.
So to sum it up, this is all about protecting illegals at the complete expense of all Americans. Those that follow the law are being hurt to protect those here illegally. What a great campaign ad your GOP opponent will have in the fall election! Senator, you gave it to this person on a golden platter! I am sure Michiganders will respond to it by retiring you.

Here is the response I got from Senator Stabenow.

Dear William,

Thank you for contacting me about the shutdown of the federal government. I share your concerns.
On January 22, 2018, the Senate reached a bipartisan agreement that funds the federal government through February 8, 2018. The agreement also funds the children’s health insurance program (CHIP) for six years and provides back pay for our military and federal workers.
My focus remains on bringing together Senators from both parties to pass a long-term budget that funds our community health centers, improves health care for our veterans, provides pension protections, and addresses other critical priorities for Michigan.
I understand the frustration of many people in Michigan who were impacted by the shutdown. It’s wrong that members of Congress still get paid during a shutdown while paychecks for members of the military and federal workers are disrupted. That’s why I introduced the No Government No Pay Act of 2018 (S.2327), which would stop members from being paid for any day that the federal government is shut down, and I am donating my pay for each day of the recent shutdown. I am also cosponsoring a bill to make sure our troops and military personnel are paid even in the event of a government shutdown.
Thank you again for reaching out to me. As always, feel free to contact my office if I can be of assistance to you or your family.
