I pray you had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving! There are so many things to be thankful for and it is good to take time to remember God's Providence and blessing on our lives! I'd like to share with you an update and ask that you read to the end where I share a special alert about some things happening in Michigan politics that you will want to know about!
A few weeks after the election, I attended orientation for newly elected Representatives and had the humbling opportunity to spend some time on the House Floor in the Capitol where we learned the process of casting votes and speaking on the floor. Overall, we spent a few days going over all the processes and procedures relating to every part of the job, from tax forms to researching and writing legislation. Now I have turned my attention on hiring staff that I can trust and possess the skills and experience needed to get the job done for the people in my district and the state. I also have until December 31st to put forward my first ten bills and so I am spending some time in thought, prayer, and research on what bills, if any, I will put forward in the next month. It is hard to believe that on January 1st I will be sworn in; I want to be as prepared and ready as possible to hit the ground running!
Directly following orientation I had the honor to speak to conservative leaders from across the nation at the TEA Party Patriots Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. Although I have spoken to many groups around the state, this was the first time speaking since the election. I enjoyed sharing my story and giving them some tools to take home to their perspective groups and states to strengthen their impact. Their response was wonderful and I have received a number of invitations to speak in many other states around the country!
My experiences and the events over this past month have impressed upon me the precious and fragile gift of liberty paralleled with the sacrifice and cost of it's preservation. While in DC, I had the opportunity to visit the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials as well as taking a private tour of the Capitol Building with U.S. Representative Kerry Bentivolio. What incredible vision and fortitude our Founding Fathers and early leaders had and how thankful I am for them! Lately, Nehemiah 4:14 has been on my mind, "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes." I am many times disappointed by the lack of leaders who will stand up and fight for the values and principles that are foundational and priceless!
With my thoughts thusly framed, I am now thrust into the fight for religious freedom happening right now in Michigan. Unfortunately, while Michigan families had their attention on Thanksgiving and celebrating religious freedom, the Lansing machine has continued to work behind the scenes. As you may already know, we are in a lame duck session and during the upcoming days we will see a slew of bills being passed at breakneck speed out of a legislature where many Representatives and Senators are term limited out and no longer held accountable by the voters.
A number of these bills are neither good for Michigan nor reflect our conservative values of liberty and limited government. One bill in particular, the expansion of Elliott-Larsen to include special protection status to those in the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Transgender communities, will destroy our First Amendment rights and religious freedom in Michigan! This bill is being put forward by the term limited Republican leadership in the House and will give special protections for the LGBT community over and above people who do not practice that lifestyle.
As a Representative-Elect I do not have a vote during lame duck so the only voice I have is in spreading the word to let my district and our state know about what is happening in Lansing that will have an incredible impact on our children's future. This is why recently I published a press release, along with Representative-Elects Gary Glenn and Todd Courser, imploring our Representatives and Senators to publicly stand and fight against this disastrous threat against the first amendment rights and religious freedoms. I hope you will also add your voice and call your Representatives and Senators and tell them to vote no on Elliott-Larsen expansion.
Another important project I am working on is the Michigan Grassroots PowWow. A few times a year I organize these Statewide Conferences called PowWows where over 400 of the top grassroots and conservative activists attend from all over Michigan. The next one will be on January 9th and 10th at the Soaring Eagle Resort in Mt. Pleasant. I have attached the latest email I sent out about the PowWow below. I'd love to have you join us!
Other things on my immediate radar are an energy Conference in DC that I will be attending, continuing the fight against Elliott-Larsen expansion and other bad bills put forward in lame duck, my daughter Meghan's birthday, interviewing staff, researching and considering my first pieces of legislation, planning the PowWow, and picking out our Christmas tree from Janke's Tree Farm in Allegan!
May the Lord bless you and keep you and may He shine His light upon you! May He touch the hearts of our elected leaders and all in our state and nation!
With Firm Reliance on Divine Providence,
The Michigan Grassroots “Going on Offense” PowWow is happening January 9th and 10th, and if you order your tickets today, you can get a special Early Bird rate of only $20!
At this premier statewide event we will be taking proactive steps in setting the 2015 legislative agenda as well as setting the stage for the 2016 elections!
We are excited to announce that those attending Friday evening will receive a special treat with some exclusive time with Russian-born American artist Roman Genn, whose work has been featured worldwide, including on the cover of National Review. Genn has a compelling story of experiencing communism as a boy only to embrace America's Constitution and our Founding Fathers with reverence as an adult. It will be a wonderful treat to hear his story and how he has been able to use the medium of art to showcase the contrast between conservative and liberal ideas and leaders.
Friday evening will also include some focused discussion on inner party politics and the upcoming Michigan Republican Party State Convention followed by a social reception.
The buzz surrounding this event is enormous and tickets are going fast. Have you reserved your spot yet? Don’t miss out on the early bird special of $20 per ticket that closes on December 1st. Reserve your tickets today at Eventbrite by clicking here.
