"...what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?” “A Republic, if you can keep it

Please take the time to remember our fallen heroes this weekend.  Lay flowers at a grave.  Attend a parade.  Spend some of this weekend to thank a veteran for serving.

Here is a link to a commercial that touched me.  Both my Dad (WWII) and myself (Vietnam Era, Cold War, Operation Iraqi Freedom) served.  My Dad was still around to welcome me home from Iraq.  Since we were both Sergeants, there was no salute.  But there was the proud hug.

Comment to the great video Duke-Jink posted.

This was Memorial Day 2002 I think.  I was riding in a four seat Humvee in the back in a Memorial Day Parade in Comstock, MI.  The Michigan Army National Guard Company had several vehicles in the parade that day.  I was looking for people wearing something that would tell me they were a Veteran.  I would salute them.  I saw this one older Veteran wearing with either a Legion or VFW flight cap.  He was sitting back from the curb in the middle of the yard watching the parade.  So I saluted him.  He saw my salute.  He pushed himself out of the lawn chair he was sitting in with some difficulty.  He came to attention and with honor and dignity returned my salute.  This old veteran could well be "Bill" from your story.  This moment with this unknown veteran will stay with me for the rest of my life.  His honor, pride, and dignity humbled me.  Again, I salute you sir!  You are what all us Veterans should be.  You sir are the bar we all should be striving to reach.
