I was saddened to hear of the death of Leonard Nimoy, Mr. Spock from Star Trek.
I became a Trekkie, or Trekker as Mr. Nimoy preferred to call the fans when the show first aired in September 1966. That is coming up on 49 years ago. How time flies!
Mr. Nimoy had a cute line about his past. His parents came to this country as legal aliens. They became citizens. Then I go to Hollywood to become an alien!
Mr. Nimoy's parents were Jewish. He rediscovered his faith in his later years. The spread of the fingers that he used as the Vulcan greeting came from his Jewish faith. He snuck a peak at the Rabi and assistances holding their hands in a similar manner during a special part of the service. He just slightly changed it from the hand being almost horizontal to being held vertical.
Star Trek with Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Doctor McCoy showed us the three parts of being human. Kirk as the risk taking, scheming, never say die leader. Spock was the logical side of us. McCoy was the compassionate side. He hated technology unless it related to medicine.
The three showed us the sum is greater than the parts.
The show also explored social issues of the day. They explored race in ways no other show could in those days. One of the firsts was the first interracial kiss.
One episode Captain Kirk was with a band of rebels. They would mutter a phrase that was not understandable. At the end Kirk figured out what they were saying. It was the start of our Declaration of Independence. This is relevant again today.
Spock, Scotty, and Bones McCoy are now gone.
The original cast with their characters taught us much about ourselves and our society. Mr. Nimoy through Mr. Spock showed us the power and shortcomings of pure logic. He also showed us honor and honesty as virtues we should aspire to.
Star Trek spread around the world in surprising ways. One story from Vietnam was a group of our soldiers were trapped under heavy fire. No help was forth coming. The radio operator knew the VC was listening in the radio. So he had a crazy idea. He keyed the radio and started to call the USS Enterprise giving Kirk his position and requested phaser fire support. Amazingly the VC ceased the fight and retreated to avoid the incoming fire.
God Speed Mr. Nimoy on your new voyage into infinity. You lived long and prospered. Mr. Scott, Spock here.....One to beam up!
